Bhils are primarily an Adivasi people of North West India. They are the largest tribal group in India followed by Gond tribe. They are living in central, northern and western India for thousands of years.

Indo Aryan language is the prime language spoken by Bhil tribes of India.

Holi, Diwali and Akha Trij are the 3 destivals that the Bhils generally celebrate with great fervour.

History

The name ‘Bhil’ is derived from the word villu or billu, which according to the Dravidian language is known as Bow. The name Bhil is also finds mentioned in the great epic called Mahabharata and Ramayana.

In the Ramayana, a Bhil king acted as boatsman to Rama in the early part of his exile from Ayodhya. The Bhil women Shabari, the famous devotee of Rama offered ber to Lord Rama, when he was wandering through the jungles of Dhandaka, searching Sita. The Bhils are the oldest community of the forests.

During the ancient era they were considered as the great warriors who fought against the Mughals, Marathas and the Britishers.
